Payload Inefficiency

Every Load Counts. Are Yours Being Measured Accurately?

Payload inefficiencies such as under-loading, overloading, carry-back and off-centre loading are among the most costly and commonly overlooked challenges in mining operations. Each issue contributes to increased truck movements, higher fuel consumption, accelerated component wear and reduced profitability.

Loadscan’s advanced volume scanning technology addresses all four challenges by delivering accurate, real-time 3D load data that gives operations managers the visibility and evidence needed to take corrective action, coach operators and make informed decisions that improve productivity and protect the bottom line.

Under-loading could be costing you a fortune

Underloading requires additional truck movements to shift the same amount of material, increasing costs and reducing profits.

Our expertise in mining and technology enables us to help mines maximise productivity by optimising every load, thereby increasing trucking factors and improving profits. Our load volume scanner accurately measures all loads and automatically generates 3D scan images that clearly indicate under-loading, enabling corrective action (including operator training and coaching) to be taken.

Overloading increases fuel costs and CO2 emissions

In an Australian technical paper titled, “Haul truck fuel consumption and CO2 emission under various engine load conditions”, the researchers determined that overloading a large mining truck (CAT 797B) by as little as a 10% could increase fuel consumption and costs by nearly US$367,000 per annum and add 900mt CO2 emissions per truck.

Managing carry-back to improve operations

Our surface and underground mining technology helps to reduce carry-back, a common problem wherever material is being shifted which can seriously impact productivity.

By scanning all loads with the Loadscan MPS, carry-back out of the mine is accounted for and can be deducted from shift tallies, improving accuracy of actual loads shifted.

In addition, carry-back can immediately be identified through data and alerts on the message board, enabling removal from the bin.

Uneven Loads, Hidden Costs

The hidden costs of off-centre loading

We use our advanced underground and surface mining technology to reduce off-centre loading, an issue that can substantially increase operating costs.

Uneven load distribution adds stress to truck components, reducing their working life and adding substantial costs to your operation. In addition, this can create excessive tyre wear, voiding warranties and requiring premature replacement.

The 3D scans generated by the system provide a valuable visual reference that can be used for training and coaching loader operators.

  • Off-centre loading is calculated and reported within the four quadrants of the truck bin.
  • Visual warning indicators are displayed in real-time on the operator console, Overview screen and message board
Weight vs Volume

Measuring truck payloads by Weight or Volume?

Volume scanning substantially enhances the accuracy of payload measurement.

  • Volume scanning is complementary to measuring weight with scales.
  • By combining weight AND volume, measuring material bulk densities and payloads is more accurate.
  • Converting from volume back to weight using bulk density factors has proven more accurate than using onboard or dynamic weighing systems.
  • Measure ACTUAL load volumes in a truck or trailer bin, eliminating guesswork.
